Welcome to Robins Class at Greenleas Derwent Road. We are very pleased to welcome you to our class page and we are looking forward to working with you and being part of your child's Year One learning journey.
The adults in Robins this year are Mrs Solomons (Teacher Monday/Tuesday), Mrs Young (Teacher Wednesday/Thursday/Friday) Miss Howley (learning support assistant) and Mrs Edwards (1:1 learning support assistant). We are always happy to answer any questions or queries that you may have and we love to hear about your child's celebrations and achievements outside of school. Quick messages can be handed over at drop off or pick up. Please email any other questions, messages or news to the office and I will respond via email or a telephone call.
Please find below a photograph learning journey that shows some of the exciting activities we have been doing. We hope you enjoy looking at the pictures and that they give you the chance to talk to your child about their learning and share in their experiences at school.
Our trip to Buckingham Railway Centre
Robins had a great day out at the Buckingham Railway Centre where we learnt all about steam trains, diesel trains and the more modern electrical trains. We had a ride on a steam train, explored the museum that houses different trains from our history and sorted mail on the Royal Mail train. But I think the favourite part of the day was the miniature ride-on train when the children all screamed as loud as they could as they passed through the tunnel!
Take a look at the photos from our fun day out.
Mr Gumpy's Outing - Drama
We have been learning the story Mr Gumpy's Outing to link to our topic of Transport. After having the story read to us we pretended to be characters for the story to use drama as a way of retelling the story. When we know the story really well we will have a go at writing it ourselves.
Spring 2 - Design and Technology
This half term we have been learning about the country of Australia. For our Design and Technology lessons we have been designing and building a house for a wombat using recycled materials. To start our lessons we looked at the skills we would need to join our materials together. We created a skills board showing the different joins we could use.
Once we knew how to join our materials together we could design and create our own wombat houses.
Penguin Wow finish
To finish off our work on the Polar Regions we had a penguin Wow day. We came to school dressed as penguins or polar bears and had fun making lots of polar art work. We used water colour paints to paint polar animals and landscapes, made rock hopper penguin headbands and penguin puppets.
Art - collages
For our artwork this half term we are looking at creating collages using a range of materials. To begin our lessons we have developed our skills by looking at pictures of familiar views from our school playground and then used strips of materials to recreate a chosen view.
We then used our knowledge of how to uses strips of materials to create a polar region scene.
Our teacher thought our artwork was fantastic and we did too!
DT - Moving pictures
In our DT lessons this half term we made moving pictures using the Funnybones characters. We had to use a lever (lollypop stick) and a hinge (split pins) in our designs. We were so pleased with our pictures.
Walk to the post box
The children have been learning about writing and sending letters recently so we all wrote a letter to our Mummies and Daddies. We learnt how to write our addresses on our envelopes, put a stamp on them and then we took a walk to the local post box to send them. We are sure all the Mummies and Daddies loved receiving their letters.
The children in Robins class have had lots of fun in forest school over the last few weeks. They have explored a range of tools and learnt to use them safely. They have also being using their gross motor skills to swing, climb and balance. To finish off the sessions children had fun roasting marshmallows using a fire pit.
In Art we have been looking at the work of Vincent Van Gogh, particularly looking at the portraits he painted. We have been learning to sketch our features to create our own self portraits. We experimented with colouring mixing and brush sizes to paint our portraits and add detail.
We are very proud of the pictures we produced, take a look.
