Eagles and Falcons

Welcome to Year 4 at Derwent Road.  Please find below information about your child’s learning topics this half term, including learning logs and topic leaflets.  Please see our specific class pages for photos and individual class learning journeys.

Falcons and Eagles have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays.  Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit in school.

Albion Archaeology

On Friday 7th December we welcomed Tori from Albion Archaeology into Eagles and Falcons. She works locally (she even worked on the excavation of Roman Gate), and she brought all kinds of interesting finds in to show us. Not only was it very interesting to see what she'd found, but it was also great to find our what the day to day life of an archaeologist is like, and how to become one.

British Values Day

Tuesday 13th November 2018 was British Values Day at Greenleas, Derwent Road. The Year 4 children were split into 4 parties to campaign for which group would be awarded £100 to spend on activities for a Quiet Classroom at lunchtime that the whole school can use.

The 4 parties were:-

  • Red - Paper Puzzlers
  • Blue - Strategy Seekers (Strategic games such as Rubik's cubes and chess)
  • Green - Creative Crafters (Knitting, crochet, pom-pom making and mindfulness colouring)
  • Yellow - Fun books

In English lessons, the children all worked hard to write persuasive speeches and then presented them to the rest of the school who then voted.

It was a close call, but the final winners were ..... Green Group, the Creative Crafters. Look out for Quiet Lunchtime Activities coming soon.

Legion XIIII

On Monday 8th October we welcomed Cais from Legion XIIII to Greenleas, Derwent Road. He soon got the children trained up like real Romans. They improved their Latin, perfected their marching skills, and even found out how to buy a slave at a slave auction.

Thanks to all who donated cakes for our successful bake sale this week!

As Autumn 2 is such a long term, for the first two weeks we will be concluding our work on 'Ruthless Romans!'

Our focus will then move onto 'Saxon Settlements'. We will learn all about where the Anglo Saxons came from, where they settled and why they settled where they did.

In English, our writing will once again be linked to our topic.  We will be writing persuasive texts (including speeches for British Values Day), explanation texts and play scripts.  We will be teaching the children to use specific openers and conjunctions, so look out for them using them when talking to you.  In addition to this, we will have a new set of spellings for the half term as well as continuing with our bi weekly spelling patterns.

In Maths, we will be working on subtraction and multiplication. Each Maths lesson will begin with a fluency task. We will continue to focus on quick recall of multiplcation facts up to 12x12, number order, number patterns and using known facts to calculate trickier calculations.

In Science, we will be investigating states of matter.

In Computing, the children will be using 'Audacity' to edit music.

In DT we will be creating Roman cooking.

In RE we are preparing for our Christingle service at St Barnabas..
