Greenleas School drive to help pupils in mastering Maths
Maths Driving You Crazy? Finding your way with maths is to many like navigating without Sat Nav, according to Sheila Quinn, Deputy Head Teacher at Greenleas School.
In the old days as new drivers we started off with a map, or directions from Dad; then with a basic understanding we had fun exploring and creating a network in our minds of how all the roads where we lived connected. We went up a few blind alleys, took a few very long detours but eventually mastered the area where we lived. This gave us confidence to launch ourselves further afield and explore throughout the UK. We certainly would be able to tell if the Sat Nav was giving us somewhat silly directions and telling us to drive off the end of a pier. This is a confidence or mastery of navigation.
It is now 2016 and you have moved to a new town, you could just use your Sat Nav to get around without really taking in where you are. However, if the Sat Nav lost connection you would find yourself with only a basic recall of some of your most used routes, and if one of those routes had a road block you would be a little lost as you had never really developed an overall picture. You would perhaps wish you had adopted your earlier style of learning about your surroundings.
The original example of learning through exploring, demonstrates Relational Knowledge. The Sat Nav driver with only basic knowledge of their own is demonstrating Instrumental Learning. It is the former Relational Learning that leads to Mastery of a subject.
This same philosophy of Mastery is how teachers in Shanghai, China have been teaching maths with great success and is now forming an interesting initiative for the Department of Education and the National Centre of Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCTEM) who are further investigating this approach towards Maths with a number of schools in England.
Exchange teacher visits are providing maths teachers in England with the opportunity to see first-hand how the Shanghai teachers develop mastery approaches to teaching maths in China. The teachers from England then host the Chinese teachers in their schools as they demonstrate this style of teaching to a sample of English pupils.
The exchange is taking place within the Maths Hubs programme, which is coordinated by the NCETM and funded by the DfE. In July the School Standards Minister Nick Gibb announced £41m of funding over the next 4 school years, for various projects in the field of teaching for mastery.
Greenleas School is working with the Enigma Maths Hub, which is led by Denbigh School in Milton Keynes.
Deputy Head Teacher, Sheila Quinn from Greenleas Lower School in Leighton Buzzard is one of 70 teachers selected from throughout England to visit Shanghai this November. Greenleas will also be hosting two Maths Teachers from Shanghai later in the month.
Mrs Quinn explained what mastery actually looked like in an everyday situation;
“An example of mastery, can be seen within our School Council, when they count the house point tokens each week. Some of the children chose to count every token but one or two chose to make a single pile of 10 tokens, they then created more piles of tokens, not counting just keeping them level with the first. Finally, they counted the number of piles. So 8 piles of 10 tokens became 8x10 = 80. The pupils that were able to think more conceptually about this maths problem were demonstrating a deeper understanding of maths. Our goal would be to teach in such a way that all children would be able to show this confidence.”
Mrs Quinn went on to explain how that teaching might first be reflected in the early years’ classroom;
“Being able to see numbers as concepts that can be grouped together and divided and generally played with to make new groups is a fundamental concept of mastery. For this reason in the early stages, physical props are used, such as beads and blocks to allow children to play with numbers and learn how they relate to each other. When the child has mastered these relationships in the physical they move onto pictorial representation of the original blocks. This moves their learning from the physical to pictorial representations. At first they may need to cut up the pictures but eventually they will move from the physical into the pictorial and still be able to play with the numerical relationships with confidence. Finally, the pictures of 10 or 20 blocks will become the abstract numbers 10 and 20 and the children would be able to work with these abstract numbers as if they were the original physical blocks using the same level of confidence. It is also a basic necessity of this model that the child doesn’t move on to the next stage until the first is mastered. This goes beyond current classroom experiences of say, learning to count with beads as it delves into a greater understanding of the relationship between a number of objects and how they can be split apart and put back together again and how numbers therefore relate to everything around us.”
Mastering mathematics is a journey and, like our exploration as new car drivers, a long-term goal achieved through exploration, clarification, practice and application over time. It is not about just memorising key facts and procedures (or relying on technology!) as that leads to superficial understanding that can easily be forgotten, allowing you to get lost!
