The National Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to meet the aims of the school. It is flexible enough to respond to the need for change and to help pupils acquire the necessary knowledge and skills, including those of communication, decision making and problem solving. It helps pupils to understand the world in which they live and to recognise the interdependence of people and to appreciate human achievement and excellence.
The curriculum is reviewed regularly and takes into account each pupil's need for intellectual, emotional, social, physical, moral and spiritual growth. Staff cater for individual needs and offer experiences to stimulate, motivate and foster good attitudes to learning. Pupils are encouraged to develop a questioning and problem solving approach to schoolwork.
All pupils are challenged and supported, including more and less able children. Pupils are also involved in their own learning from an early age and build up their “learning journey” with their class teacher. Clear targets, which are understood by the child, help children to understand what they need to do next in order to improve. This is known as “Assessment for Learning”.
The National Curriculum includes, English, Mathematics, Science, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Design Technology, Geography, History, Art, Music, P.E. and Religious Education. It incorporates skills, themes and dimensions such as Communication, Literacy, Numeracy, Personal and Social Education, Health, Citizenship, Multi-cultural, Environmental Education and Global Learning. In Years 3 and 4 children learn French as a foreign language.
Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum relates to children aged five to seven years. Key Stage 2 relates to children aged seven to eleven years.
Work schemes to include basic skills together with a thematic approach are used in planning. We take every opportunity to enrich the curriculum in a variety of ways so that learning is enjoyable, relevant and interesting. The termly or half termly theme is known as the 'Topic' and parents are sent a letter by the class teacher (link to year group pages) at the beginning of each term outlining the work to be covered during the term.
The main curriculum areas taught at Greenleas include the following subjects. More information is available on each:
