What do governors do?

The governing body ensures the effective management of the school by working in partnership with the head teacher.  The role is strategic (although many of our governors give time to help out) and the head and staff manage the day-to-day running of the school.

We hold two full governing body meetings each term.  These are usually in the evenings and last around two and a half hours.  In addition, there are a number of committees that meet regularly to cover specific responsibilities or tasks. Click here to see our current committee structure.

What are the responsibilities of our school governors?

  • promoting high standards of educational attainment
  • setting targets for pupil achievement
  • ensuring that special educational needs are met
  • taking general responsibility for the conduct of the school
  • overseeing and monitoring the school's budget
  • making sure that the curriculum is balanced and broadly based, in particular, that the National Curriculum and religious education are taught, and report on pupils' achievement in National Curriculum assessments and examination results
  • participating in the appointment of staff (including appointing the head teacher)
  • monitoring the condition of the school buildings and grounds.

Governors need to commit to visiting school, attending meetings and undertaking training to support them in their role.

Why do schools need governors?

Every school has a governing body to represent the public in the running of schools. School governors bring perspectives from ordinary life and work with the staff and the Local Authority to help secure the best possible education for the children in the school.  There are several categories of governor appointed by different bodies that have an interest in the school.  At Greenleas these are parent governors, staff governors, community governors, local authority governors and associate members.  We also benefit from the services of a clerk who is appointed by the governing body and is responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of the governing body.

More information about the categories of governors can be found here.
